Mission & commitment
Our mission—“improving community wellness through equitable
access”—means that financial decisions are never made in
isolation. We invest in programs that enhance the well‑being of
underserved populations, even when the immediate financial return is
modest. Students can use this tension between mission and margin to
explore how nonprofit organizations measure success.
Charitable care & community programs
Charity care & financial assistance
Laurel Ridge provides free or discounted care to patients who
cannot afford to pay. Eligibility is based on income and
medical necessity. Though it pressures margins, charity care
reinforces our commitment to equity and builds community trust.
Clinical partnerships
We partner with local clinics, federally qualified health
centers and public health agencies to expand preventive
screenings, vaccinations and chronic disease management. These
collaborations improve population health and reduce
avoidable admissions.
Outreach & education
Targeted outreach programs bring health education,
nutrition counseling and fitness classes into underserved
neighborhoods. Our mobile van and telehealth platforms
bridge geographic gaps and support self‑management of chronic
conditions.
Workforce development
Laurel Ridge sponsors scholarships, internships and training
programs for local residents pursuing careers in health
professions. These initiatives strengthen the regional workforce
while creating economic opportunity.
Community benefit reporting
As part of our nonprofit obligations, we document and
publicly report the dollar value of community benefits,
including charity care, bad debt, subsidies for low
reimbursement services and health improvement initiatives.
Access & equity
Our payer mix—35% Medicare, 15% Medicaid, 40% commercial and 10%
self‑pay—reflects our commitment to caring for all. Laurel Ridge
continually seeks to remove barriers to care by offering sliding
scale payments, investing in rural access and maintaining a bilingual
workforce. These policies present financial challenges but are
integral to our mission and to the real‑world complexities learners
confront.
Balancing mission & margin
Community impact does not exist apart from financial decisions. When
building new clinics, expanding charity care or launching outreach
programs, Laurel Ridge must evaluate how these choices affect
operating margins, liquidity and debt capacity. Learners can explore
these trade‑offs in exercises that connect community benefit to
financial statements and ratio analysis.
